Adam Wainwright 'At Peace' With Retirement Choice

Sep 27, 2023 12:57 AM

Eight days after winning his 200th game, 42-year-old Adam Wainwright said Tuesday he has thrown his final pitch.

"I've thought a lot about it the last few days, but I'm in a really good place mentally," the St. Louis Cardinals right-hander said ahead of his team's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. "No regrets about anything I ever did. No second thoughts of, 'Am I making the right decision on pitching or retiring?' I'm at peace with all of it in this spot that I've never been.

"I've literally left everything I had out there, for real."

Matt Olson Hits 50-Home Run Mark, One Short Of Braves Record

Sep 12, 2023 1:21 AM

Matt Olson was raised an Atlanta Braves fan and appreciated the significance of the stars he passed on the way up the franchise's single-season home run list. Hall of Famers Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews were among those sluggers left behind as Olson crushed one homer after another in a career campaign for the best team in baseball.

With home run Nos. 49 and 50 on Monday against the Phillies -- the first one launched off the second deck and the second sliced the opposite way to left field -- Olson entered rarified air among Atlanta's greats.

Braves Retire Andruw Jones' No. 25

Sep 10, 2023 1:34 AM

Andruw Jones, who won 10 Gold Gloves in a career that began with 12 seasons in Atlanta, became the 11th Braves player or manager to have his number retired on Saturday night.

His former teammates hope the honor adds momentum to Jones' case for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Jones' No. 25 was retired before Atlanta's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and some believe the distinction was overdue. The center fielder played his last season in 2012 with the New York Yankees.

Derek Jeter Attends His First Old-Timers' Day

Sep 9, 2023 7:57 PM

Back at Yankee Stadium and hearing the cheers at age 49, Derek Jeter had some advice for the team he led to five titles.

"I'm working on rebranding the name Old-Timers' to something else," he said. "When you're playing, when you're on the bench and you're watching the game, and you could never see yourself being introduced at Old-Timers', because you don't ever think you're going to get old, which -- we are not old, right? We're not old. Older. But, man, it's a special feeling. The fans, what makes this organization great is the respect that they have for the history."

The former Yankees captain attended his first Old-Timers' Day on Saturday as New York celebrated the 25th anniversary of the 1998 team that won 125 games. He was introduced last, just like Joe DiMaggio used to be. A recording of late public address announcer Bob Sheppard boomed: "Now batting, No. 2, Derek Jeter."
